What is Electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy at HACT is an advanced treatment used to manage pain, reduce inflammation, and speed up healing. By applying controlled electrical currents directly to the affected area, electrotherapy works to stimulate nerves and muscles, enhancing blood flow and accelerating tissue repair. It’s particularly effective for conditions like arthritis, bursitis, and post-surgical recovery, offering targeted pain relief without the need for medication. Our physiotherapists carefully assess each patient’s condition to determine the most suitable electrotherapy settings, ensuring safe and effective treatments. Electrotherapy sessions at HACT are comfortable, often resulting in a mild tingling sensation, and are frequently combined with other treatments for comprehensive healing.

Electrophysical agents are utilised to bring about physiological effects, and it is these changes that bring about the therapeutic benefits. Electrotherapy treats chronic pain, musculoskeletal injuries, muscle wasting, and nerve pain by using targeted and controlled electrical stimulation.

At HACT, we use different electrotherapy modalities:

Ultrasound: High-frequency sound waves are used to help the self-healing process by increasing blood circulation and cell activity. It can be used to treat  ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints. A gel is applied to the skin to make the contact between the treatment head and the body more effective.

Interferential therapy (IFT): uses a medium-frequency current for the treatment of pain, muscle spasms, and sprains, to increase local blood flow, and to reduce oedema. In some cases, TENS machines can be recommended for the self-management of pain at home.

How It Works

Our pain management program is designed to not only reduce pain but also improve your overall functionality and emotional well-being. Patients often experience:

Muscle Stimulation

Electrical impulses activate muscle fibers to enhance strength, prevent muscle atrophy, and support recovery.

Effective Pain Relief

Electrical currents block pain signals to the brain, providing effective relief and creating a gentle, soothing sensation.

Improved Blood Flow

Stimulates increased circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues to speed up healing and reduce inflammation.

Benefits of Electrotherapy

By following a structured plan, you’re not only relieving symptoms but also building resilience and confidence for long-term health.
